Forest Park
Forest Park is an urban municipal park located in the northwest part of Portland, Oregon, United States, with its boundary line extending into the northern edge of Willamette National Park. Stretching over about eight miles along hillsides bordering the Willamette River, it is among the most popular urban forest preserves in Oregon.
The first Forest Park was established in 1873, when the city was just beginning to become a metropolis and a railroad station was built. Today, the park is an amazing mix of old-growth forest, natural grasslands, and beautiful new gardens that combine old and new design principles with modern technology. Its impressive landscape also includes a natural meadow, an educational garden, a state forest, an arboretum, a sports complex, and an amphitheater where the annual Multnomah Jazz and Blues Festival is held each July.
Today, Forest Park continues to attract visitors from across the nation and world. With its unique, scenic natural setting, and easy access to major attractions in Portland, the park remains a top spot in Portland as a destination for outdoor recreation. Visitors are able to enjoy hiking, mountain biking, nature watching, horseback riding, boating, water sports, and the beautiful forest surrounding the park.
The Oregon Department of Forestry manages and operates the urban forest preserve. A state-of-the-art trail system and beautiful hiking and biking trails provide opportunities for both beginners and experienced hikers and bikers. The park is also home to several historical areas, historic buildings, historic landmarks, parks, gardens, and historical markers.

When visiting Forest Park, visitors are encouraged to walk along the hiking trails and take a leisurely stroll along the banks of the Tualatin River. Enjoy a picnic lunch at one of the many picnic areas, or get away from the trail and enjoy the breathtaking scenery along the urban forest preserve. Hike to the top of the majestic mountains that surround the park and view the city from a little higher than you normally would. Or plan an exciting family outing with your friends and family and bring your children.
